More architecture

Take a look at examples of buildings that I find interesting from an architectural perspective. I don't think the architects themselves are glad with these shots as they are my impressions. Still, most of the time it's the essence of the design that must have prompted me.

The Shark's mouth

An abstract impression of what the locals call 'de haaienbek'; this is the the impressive awning above the entrance to the train station.

Highrise

I don't know if this is a keeper, but with its height of 114.6 meters, yes, I looked it up, the Achmeatoren in Leeuwarden is the tallest building in Northern Netherlands.

City Bridge

The city of Kampen is proud of its City Bridge, a lifting bridge with high towers that are reminiscent of the centuries' old towers in the city itself. Exposure 1/10 sec @ F/45 at 300 mm.

Modern design

In a tourist hotspot such as Puerto del Carmen you will expect a combination of cheap souvenir shops to pretty boutiques. This edifice to house a shopping centre has now been erected quite close to the quaint harbour, and aims to be upscale.

Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen

Between the Kunsthal and Boijmans Van Beuningen, a striking bowl-like building covered by mirrors will open up in 2021. It is an art depot that will make the entire collection accessible to the public, instead of the meagre 8% that's currently exhibited. The mirrored facade reflects the Rotterdam skyline. Spectacular, but I wonder if they are going to have a maintenance problem in the near future ...

Entrance parking at Museumplein

An underground parking connects the three museums. Even the design of the entrance has been paid attention to, although I am not fond of the barren concrete square that now lies at the foot of the depot.

Train station Arnhem

In the mid 2010s, the Nederlandse Spoorwegen published an projected estimate of 40% growth in passenger movements in the next decade with a corresponding plan to modernise and expand the major train stations. That estimate was pre-covid. Breda is such a major hub that was completed in 2019.

Train station Arnhem (2)

The building is an amalgamation of aluminium, concrete and natural materials. I am sure you can find an overview of this NS station on the internet, as usual I have been concentrating on the details ☺.

I don't think people in Berlin will appreciate this heading, as only a few months after opening up, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, lost its roof after a storm. It's a building used for conferences and exhibitions, we visited a Bauhaus expo there.

Parasol

It must have been a scorching hot square in the centre of Sevilla. So this contraption called Parasol Metropol was created: you keep cool under it which is quite nice for the weekly market, and the stairs lead you to a view (although not really stunning) over the city.
