The naked tree

'Typically Dutch, those country roads lined with trees', I often hear foreigners comment. I checked. Some of these roads go back to Roman times. The orderly lines of trees were apparently planted there for a variety of reasons: amongst others, shade, windbreaker, as a guidance after snowfall, to drain water, to house animals and insects ... Anyway, graphically it's a treat.

Abstract

A selection of previously unpublished pictures taken in the near vicinity.

Two trees

Country lane

I admit, it's become a sort of an addiction to make pictures of the tall trees alongside the road we live at, but for the meantime I can't get enough of them. 1,5 sec @ F/13 at 300 mm, 6-stopper.

Row of trees

Threesome

A bit further along the road I found these three trees with a nice soft light on them. Movement was upwards and stopping when I reached the crown of the trees. It's a sister shot from the one further down on this page. Exposure 2 sec @ F/38 @ 300 mm.

Trees along the street

Row of trees in the evening light

Yes, I'm 'into trees' at the moment. Can't help it. Exposure 4 sec @ F/16, 83 mm, 6-stopper. Movement going upwards and then holding still.

Close-up of cat

Row of trees

The green of the trees is getting dominant in nature now. I tried to go after the pastel water colourish tones and get an impressionist image. Exposure 2 sec @ F/27, 70-300 mm @ 300 mm, movement upwards with a light glide to the left.

Row of trees

Impressionist

For just a few minutes, the sun appeared from behind the clouds after a day of rain, thunder and lots of cloud. Straight out of the camera using a jiggly upward movement, 4 sec, F/11, 24-105 mm @ 34 mm, H&Y 64 (6 stopper).

Narcissus along a ditch

Dreef in Est

Buttercups

From a slightly different angle earlier in the day, this is the same ditch with buttercups as the one above, the movement was different though: 1,5 sec upwards twice stopping during exposure.

Rapeseed along a ditch

Evening light

Shot just outside our house, trees lining the road, with a weak setting sun. 3 sec @ F/32, 70-300 mm @ 100 mm, H&Y filter 6 stopper to lower the shutter speed.

Barren

Rather straightforward upward movement with a slight jiggle. Exposure 3 sec @ F/22, 70-300 mm @ 91 mm, H&Y filter 6 stopper.

Trees at de Dreef

Buttercups and rapeseed

I combined a sharp image of the road near Est with an ICM version of 1 sec with an upward movement halting half way for a short moment.

Trees along the street

Rapeseed along the dyke

A different approach: the river Waal, though meandering beautifully through a gorgeous river landscape, is at the same time a sleeping giant: it scared the h*ll out of us when we, together with 250,000 people, had to leave our house in January 1995 at a few hours' notice as the dyke was about to break. Hence the somewhat uncanny atmosphere I tried to create. 7th place at Fotocafé Zaltbommel.

It's a slow spring and it will take a few more weeks before these willows will carry leaves. 1 sec @ F/19.

Willows about to bear leaves

I don't know enough about willows, but I have never seen branches this yellow before. They made me park on the grass and I tried to catch them.

Tall trees

We are so fortunate to have trees along the road in front of our house. They have been pruned far too much and they look like lolly pops. Reason is to allow passage to agricultural traffic without losing their crop. Using ICM gave them back their branches they are entitled to, and made them stand tall.
